Belgian Waffle Recipe

Sundays are for sleeping in, drinking coffee at the kitchen table, and making a delicious breakfast from scratch! No need for a waffle mix when you have this recipe in under your belt!

One of our favorite meals to make on the weekend together as a family is this Homemade Waffle Recipe – they’re just as delicious as my Baked French Toast Casserole.

We love pulling out our Belgian Waffle Maker – the same one we received as a wedding gift years ago – and making a homemade waffle batter that promises to be the most amazing waffles from scratch you’ve ever had!

I grew up with my mom and dad using everyone’s favorite Bisquick waffle recipe. Bisquick has a wonderful flavor and always turns out amazing. But, I also like to make my pancakes and waffles batter from scratch whenever possible.

How To Make Homemade Waffles

Ingredients

This recipe is easy to make and uses everyday ingredients you most likely already have on hand in your pantry:

  • flour – regular flour is best for this recipe
  •  melted butter – trust me. Melted butter gives this waffle recipe the most amazing taste and texture.
  •  baking powder – to make your waffles nice and fluffy.
  •  eggs – I like to use large, good quality eggs.
  • sugar – Don’t leave this out. 
  • vanilla – Madagascar vanilla gives you the best flavor

 Directions 

  1. Preheat your waffle iron and spray with cooking spray or rub a little melted butter on.
  2. Whisk together the dry ingredients – flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the eggs with a mixer until light and fluffy and pale in color.
  4. Add the vanilla to the egg mixture.
  5. Mix the egg mixture into the dry mixture.
  6. Add the butter and milk into the mixture- blending until just smooth.
  7. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes before adding to the waffle iron.
  8. Pour onto hot iron and cook until golden brown.
  9. Serve topped with pure maple syrup and butter or your favorite fruit and whipped cream.

How to Keep Waffles Warm

  • Set Oven to “warm” setting
    To keep waffles warm while you’re whipping up more for your family, preheat your oven to the “warm” setting or lowest setting available.
  • Place waffles right on the oven rack
    Place the waffles right on the rack when you take them out of your waffle iron. The waffles will stay crispy and warm until you’re ready to enjoy!

Can you use a pancake recipe for waffles?

Waffles are made of a richer batter than pancakes, with an additional egg and oil. In fact, most pancake mixes offer directions for creating waffles out of the mix if you decide to go that route!

How do you make waffle batter from scratch?

It’s easy! By mixing flour, butter, baking powder, eggs, sugar, and vanilla together, you can have a delicious homemade waffle batter recipe from scratch in no time! Just follow the recipe below to learn more!

What is the difference between a waffle and a Belgian waffle?

The texture is also lighter and crispier. To make a Belgian waffle, you need a waffle iron with a deeper, larger grid pattern. Most Belgian waffle recipes are yeast-based, to get that crispy texture. But you also can use a waffle batter that uses beaten egg whites for lightness like this one!

Leaving the lumps in will give you a fluffier and more tender waffle in the long run. A good mixture will have the consistency of pancake batter or honey—not so thick and clumpy that it’s clinging to your whisk or so runny that it’s essentially water.

How do you make waffles crispy?

Pour the batter into a preheated waffle maker that has been sprayed with cooking spray and cook for about 3-4 minutes – check and see if they are done to your liking, if not cook a little longer. If the waffles don’t get crispy enough in your waffle iron, place them on a rack set on a baking sheet (or it can be the rack in the oven if it’s clean) and bake in a 250F oven for another 5-10 minutes, until crisp.

If you don’t have a warm setting, set it to 200°F. Place a cooling rack on top of a cookie sheet and put it into the oven. By placing the rack on top of the sheet rather than placing the waffles directly on the sheet, you are allowing the hot air to circulate right around the waffle to keep it crisp.

Can You Freeze Waffles?

YES! You can freeze waffles in ziplock freezer bags and pull them out as needed throughout the week. All you need to do to reheat waffles is to pop them in the oven, microwave or even the toaster! This is the perfect make-ahead homemade waffle recipe from scratch!

    My wife and I made this with a mini waffle maker. Takes about 6 or 7 minutes of cook time per waffle but it works and taste excellent. Absolutely delicious. We had extras but cooked them just long enough so not browned or crispy but could be frozen to use in out toaster for later.

    Can you make this batter the night before and refrigerate it for the next morning?

    1. We haven’t tested this as an overnight batter, so we wouldn’t recommend it.

    Delicious…. I made these waffles yesterday using a large waffle iron (not Balgium) which makes four square waffles. I doubled the recipe which made 30 waffles. My intent was to make enough to freeze so I was very pleased. My first taste of the waffles reminded me of a funnel cake, yummy.

    I made this recipe as stated and the batter was very lumpy and thin. Maybe the order in which the ingredients were added together was off. Loved the taste but obviously to me something was off. Please advise. The “epic fail” review had the same problem. Thank you!that

  7. I hate making waffles because they never come out right. However, my family wanted waffles for their New Year breakfast, so I quick looked up recipes online and found this one. I followed it exactly as written, except I had to use gluten-free all purpose flour and liquid Stevia instead of white sugar. These waffles came out PERFECT and were delicious! I didn’t even use my huge Belgium waffle maker. I used some $10 mini waffle maker that I received as a holiday gift and they still came out just right! I am keeping this recipe and will use it again because it’s the only waffle recipe that seems to work for me!

    Excellent recipe… only had self rising flour so skipped the baking powder. Came out light and fluffy – far better than any of the pre-made mixes we have tried in the past!

  14. Followed recipe exactly and it was an epic fail. Batter was lumpy and when placed in waffle iron, the butter leaked out and it was a mess an waffles were inedible. Probably wasted $10 of perfectly good ingredients on this recipe. Used many of your other recipes but this was a massive fail.

    Why would you mix the eggs with the dry ingredients before the milk and butter… now you have a dough and you’ll have lumps. Poor execution

    This recipe was my first time making waffles and after seeing the comments i decided to only use 2 tea spoons of baking powder, it worked
    out really well.
    I also suggest using a hand blender to get all the chunks out of the batter at the end as mine had lots of big chunks but overall good recipe.
