Do you have a little one who just can’t get enough of Spiderman, Superman, and other comic book characters? A comic book themed party could be just the ticket to make his or her day extra special! However, the cost of Marvel-branded merchandise can quickly add up, when you factor in decorations, costumes, and invitations. Getting crafty with a colourful comic book theme is fun, and a DIY approach can also save you a bundle! Here are a few ideas to help you get started.

Invitations
Kick off the party with DIY invitations. Create cards using comic book pages on one side, or make your own postcards with cut-outs of brightly coloured stars and other comic patterns. If it’s a birthday party, put a photo of the birthday boy into a superhero scene.
Costumes
For superhero costumes, you have several options. One is to make your own capes, turning this into an activity for the party. Use coloured felt and cut it into a cape shape, with superhero emblems and letters to glue on the back. If your little one has their heart set on a particular comic book character, you can buy a professional Spiderman costume online, however. Get creative with a mix of store-bought costumes and homemade accessories, to give a personal spin on the comic book characters. Start off by browsing through costumes for ideas, which you can see at Funidelia.
Party Décor
You can really go wild with DIY decorations when you have a comic book theme! Here are some decorative ideas:
1. Create a cityscape for your comic book characters to go wild in, using cardboard cut-outs or stencils of skyscrapers. Stage photos using this backdrop, and send the images home as keepsakes.
2. Make large paper cutouts of comic book captions, such as “Whizz” and “Bop!”
3. If you want a truly epic piece of decoration, create a telephone booth for guests to change their clothes in. You can do this with an old refrigerator box and some red paint.
4. Use comic book pages as placemats or food wrappers.
5. Photocopied comic book pages also can be folded into triangles and used as bunting.
6. Create character-specific accents, such as American flags for Captain America or cardboard cut-outs of spiders for Spiderman.
7. Garnish refreshments with printed out slogans and brightly coloured flags. You can stick these in mini sandwiches, cupcakes, and other finger foods.
8. Cut sandwiches into fun shapes like stars and spiders to really make them stand out!
9. Don’t forget to pay plenty of attention to the cake. You can use a printed transfer to put a comic book scene on the cake, or you could ice it in the colour scheme of your little one’s favourite character.
10. Finish your look with colourful streamers and balloons.
Finally, send your guests home with comic book party favours, like spider-shaped cookies or Superman cupcakes. Green rock candy looks just like Kryptonite, and also makes a good giveaway for goodie bags. Beyond the sugary treats, fill bags with mini comic books and silly putty to go with them. Let your creativity run wild, whether you opt to decorate with purely DIY crafts or combine them with store-bought merchandise.
