It’s hard to believe but we are in the last days of school here in Central Illinois! I don’t know about you, but I am READY. I am ready to have some downtime and to not have to worry about homework, early bedtimes, packing lunches and remembering library books! I am definitely not one of those moms that sing “Hallelujah” when school is back in session. I would totally be a homeschooling mom if I was more disciplined. I would be so bad at sticking to a curriculum schedule. Not good for my little ones. Maybe my 8 year old – teacher wanna be could do it for me!

5 Summer Activities To Do With Big Kids

The problem I have with Summer is that the kids always want something to do – they want to have activities each day. So, I need to come up with some fun things for the summer to keep them busy and happy. I am not the mom that feels they need to have every minute of every day filled and scheduled. But, I would like to have some things for them to do. Of course I turned to Pinterest to get some awesome and fun ideas for the summer and I put together some of my favorite ideas to share with you, too!

FIVE SUMMER ACTIVITIES TO DO WITH YOUR BIG KIDS

1. One of the things I want to do this Summer with my big kids is to make sure they are serving instead of just being served. This Random Acts of Kindness Summer list from Thirty Handmade Days is a perfect start!

2. My kids love to read so what better way to spend the Summer than by expanding their minds and vocabulary with FREE Reading Programs! My kids always participate in our local library’s program, but having more choices online is a great thing! Saving Dollars and Sense has a ton of resources on her page to help you find the right program for you!

3. Since my Ella is EIGHT YEARS OLD (how did that happen?!)  I thought it would be a good time to really pour into her and teach her some things that she may not know about running a home – baking, cooking, dishes, cleaning, meal planning, making a grocery list, etc.. I think she’ll really enjoy it and I will too! She’s very responsible and is already helping out a ton! Here’s a kid friendly recipe for baking bread from Five J’s Homeschooling Resources that will come in handy!

4. Something that is totally new to us but I think will be an awesome family activity is Geocaching! Heard of it? Geocaching is a free real-world outdoor treasure hunt. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS and can then share their experiences online. So fun! We can go on a treasure hunt as a family and the best part – it’s FREE! Teachmama.com has a great article on explaining it all! I’m excited to get started on this one and I know the kids will love it!
